Pipe Labeling in the Medical Industry
Standards for Health Care Facilities
The National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) standards for Health Care Facilities requires that all pipes carrying medical gasses to be labeled with the contents, direction of flow, pressure, and any other detail that needs to be noted. Oxygen, Vacuum, Medical Air, Nitrous Oxide, and Nitrogen are just a few of the gasses the NFPA 99 requires to be labeled.
Label texts must be at least 3/8" tall and run parallel with the pipe and must appear in the following locations:
- At intervals of 20' or less
- At changes of piping direction
- Before and after barriers
- On access doors to enclosures containing piping, valves, or other medical gas components.
