Why Are Pipe Labels Important?
For
safety: Clear identification of
pipes and tubing reduces the potential for mistakes. Labels should
be clear and easy to understand, so that workers, contractors, visitors,
inspectors can determine the contents of a pipe at a glance.
Proper
identification is important for emergency personnel who respond
to an on-site incident. Pipes may contain substances that could
be vital for them to know about, either to assist in dealing
with the situation, or to aid in identifying potential additional hazards.
For employees,
pipe markers are important for accident prevention. Not knowing
what materials are in a pipe, and the direction of flow, can result
in accidents, personal injury and damage to equipment.
For compliance with regulations: Labeling of hazardous materials, including hazardous materials within pipes and tubes, is required. Certain industries, such as the pulp and paper industry, may be required to follow specific labeling practices. Even when specific practices aren't mandated by law, failure to adequately identify potential hazards can result in OSHA citations.
ANSI / ASME A13.1 is the general industry standard for pipe marking. The 2007 version of this important code contains substantial changes from earlier versions, which employers and plant managers should be aware of. Specialized codes govern pipe markings in the fields of ammonia refrigeration and medical gases.
For improved
profitability: Properly identified pipes
and tubing result in higher productivity. By putting critical information at the point of need, pipe labels allow operations personal and maintenance staff to find the pipe they need easily and accurately. This means less confusion, less wasted search time, and fewer operator errors.
By reducing errors caused by mis-identifying pipes or valves, pipe labels can help to avoid wasted product and unnecessary downtime. The result—greater
productivity. Proper labeling makes a confusing array
of pipes and valves into an easily understandable system.
